Accelerating Action on SDG7 and Its Interlinkages for a Final Push Towards 2030

Sustainable Development Goal 7 — ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all — stands out as one of the brightest areas of progress across the 2030 Agenda. Over the last decade, more people have gained access to electricity than ever before, and the clean energy transition has gained irreversible momentum.

Yet, despite these important gains, progress remains too slow and too uneven. Hundreds of millions of people still lack access to electricity, billions continue to rely  on polluting fuels and technologies for cooking, and many countries face persistent barriers related to finance, infrastructure, technology and institutional capacity.  Moreover, geopolitical tensions, supply-chain disruptions, affordability pressures and intensifying climate impacts are threatening to reverse the progress achieved. This edition of the SDG 7 Policy Briefs comes at a critical juncture.

The final years to 2030 must be about implementation at scale. It will be essential to ensure stronger national strategies, coherent regulatory frameworks, improved data systems, greater institutional capacity, practical partnerships and finance that  reaches those facing the largest gaps, building on inclusive approaches and full, effective, and meaningful participation of women in decision making.

We must urgently accelerate progress on SDG7 to fully realize its catalytic potential. The challenge is no longer only one of technology ambition; it is increasingly one of implementation, finance,  infrastructure, and inclusion. We must focus on how to accelerate delivery at scale, especially in the countries and communities furthest behind
