From Call to Count: Gender-Responsive Energy Actions for the Final Mile

 

You are cordially invited to join a high-level discussion on advancing gender-responsive energy actions at the 2026 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), contributing to the final in-depth review of SDG 7 on affordable and clean energy.

Organized by Iceland, Kenya, ESMAP- The World Bank Group and ENERGIA, in collaboration with the Working Group on Gender Indicators in Sustainable Energy, and Co-conveners of the Gender and Energy Compact, this event will bring together Member States, international organizations, and key stakeholders to explore how gender-responsive data, policies, and commitments can accelerate progress toward universal energy access and a more equitable energy transition.

Background

Despite growing global commitments, the energy transition remains marked by deep gender inequalities, with benefits and burdens unevenly distributed between women and men. These disparities extend far beyond energy access, constraining health outcomes, social empowerment, educational opportunities, and full participation in economic development. Climate change and the ongoing geopolitical crises have further intensified these inequalities.

This year’s HLPF is expected to be a milestone for bold, transformative action by United Nations Member States and stakeholders to accelerate progress on SDG 7 and its interlinkages with other SDGs over the next four years and beyond. The side event provides a critical opportunity to inform intergovernmental discussions and strengthened momentum for gender-responsive language and commitments in the 2026 Ministerial Declaration.

The Side Event will include:

• A presentation of findings from the systematic mapping of gender indicators within SDG 7 reporting frameworks.
• Regional Evidence: Research and data-driven insights from the African and Latin American contexts.
• Good practices and lessons learned from Member States and regional actors on strengthening gender-disaggregated energy data collection and use.
• Interventions from key Governments, custodian agencies and other relevant stakeholders
