Since its founding in 1996, ENERGIA has grown from a small awareness-raising newsletter into a global network of more than 140 partners in 26 countries. It is now recognized as an authority on gender, sustainable energy, and climate justice. This report, written by Soma Dutta, traces that 30-year journey. It shows how ENERGIA helped secure clean cooking as SDG Target 7.1.2, co-chairs the SDG 7 Technical Advisory Group, and helped bring gender into UNFCCC climate texts for the first time. It also co-leads the Gender and Energy Compact, which now has more than 100 institutions behind it. Through its Women’s Economic Empowerment program, ENERGIA has supported more than 19,000 women energy entrepreneurs, who have reached 9 million last-mile consumers with clean energy solutions in Indonesia, Kenya, Nepal, Rwanda, Senegal and Tanzania. At the country and regional levels, ENERGIA’s work has shaped national policies in multiple countries and led to the ECOWAS Policy for Gender Mainstreaming in Energy Access. The report also sets out lessons from three decades of work and ENERGIA’s priorities for the post-2030 agenda. At the center is a mission that remains urgent: to place women at the center of energy transitions.
