Women have a critical role to play in achieving SDG7, but barriers such as access to sustainable energy, education, finance, career advancement and insufficient involvement in decision making processes prevent them from leading, participating in, and benefitting from the sustainable energy transition on a level playing field with men. Moreover, ensuring access to clean, modern, and affordable sustainable energy solutions for women is fundamental to a just and inclusive energy transition.

On September 8, 2021, 08.00 – 09.30 EST (14:00 – 15:30 CEST) the Governments of Iceland and Kenya together with ENERGIA, GWNET and UNIDO and their partners ACCESS, Clean Cooking Alliance, Practical Action East Africa, Power for ALL, Shine, SEWA, UN Women and UN ESCWA will co-host a Deep-Dive workshop to discuss the Energy Compact on gender and energy and how to accelerate action on SDG7 in the run-up to the High Level Dialogue on Energy (HLDE) and COP26.

This Deep-Dive Workshop will:

  • Provide an overview of the energy compact process and background.
  • Explore the need and opportunities for catalysing action by all stakeholders towards mainstreaming a gender transformative approach in energy transition strategies, initiatives and energy compacts.
  • Present the idea and explore the process of creating and registering an Energy Compact to catalyze action to enhance gender equality and empower women for SDG7 that is measurable and actionable;
  • Ask for comments and engagement from participants.

This Deep-Dive Workshop will be an opportunity to express strong political will, international cooperation, and increased funding and investment to build a gender equal energy sector, in which both women and men can equally lead, participate and benefit.
