During the 14th edition of the European Development Days (EDD), high-level representatives from governments, organizations and institutions will discuss how to strengthen the political support, knowledge and capacity to accelerate the adoption of clean and sustainable energy.
Lack of access to clean fuels and technologies in homes and health care facilities results in major adverse effects for public health, climate change, sustainable development and efforts to close the gender gap. Providing clean and sustainable energy solutions to all will contribute to mitigating these adverse outcomes and advance the achievement of many SDGs, including health coverage, gender equality and universal access to energy.
The 14th edition of the European Development Days, taking place digitally on 15-16 June 2021, will convene under the theme “The Green Deal for a Sustainable Future” and will gather ministries, organizations and institutions to discuss actions needed to build greener and more inclusive societies and economies. In this context, the World Health Organization (WHO), Hivos and ENERGIA, with the support of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), will organize a session on Healthy people & planet – The power of clean energy solutions for health & climate.
This session will provide the opportunity to discuss the current energy status in households and health facilities and its impacts on health, gender and climate and development. The panel discussion will also highlight the importance of building strong collaborations between sectors to increase commitments, catalyze actions, create an enabling policy environment and funnel investments to achieve universal access to clean and sustainable energy of public and health facilities. It will showcase the successful strategic roadmap endorsed by over 20 leaders and high-level health and energy champions, including ENERGIA and Hivos, constituting the newly launched High Level Coalition on Health and Energy.
